Connecting to Stratics IRC

Quick connection guide by Ling of Guild Wars Stratics

IRC can be a little complex if you don't know IRC, so here's a brief walkthrough.

This doesn't explain what things mean, it's just a spoon-fed walkthrough to get you set up and onto the network. Once you're on, you can learn what it all means

First off, you need yourself a client - something to connect to the network and enable you to chat to others. The most popular one is mIRC, and because of this, i'll be explaining some of its features and options. Get to the mIRC site, download it, and install it.

Next, you need to connect to the stratics server. The best thing to do is go here and find out which server is nearest to you. I use glowfish, so we'll use that in the example. In the main window, type in /server irc.glowfish.de 6668, which should connect you to the server. You then need to register your nick. Type in /nick Ling (where Ling is your name - use your own nick!). It's possible that the nick has already been taken, so you may have to choose a different one. Now you have to register it. Type in /ns register password here your.email@theserver.com. It is not necessary to include your email address at all, it is only used for password recovery purposes. Your nick is now registered.

You're now set up for mIRC.

Look top left, there's an icon - a folder under a hammer. Click on this, and it will bring up the mIRC options window. On the left hand side is a navigation tree - expand the first one (Connect) and click on options. click the 'Perform' button. Tick the 'Perform on connect' box, and then clcik on 'Add', and select 'Stratics' from the drop-down list. In the box below it, you have to add something looking like this

/nick Ling
/ns identify passwordhere
/j #yourgamechannelhere,#yoursecondgamechannelhere

Press ok, and you'll be back to the options window. Tick the 'connect on startup' box. Back on the left-hand tree, click on IRC, and tick 'auto-join channel on invite'. This isn't obligatory, but it does make it easier on startup. The downside is that someone invites you into a channel, you'll automatically jump in there. Should be fine though.

Something else useful is the highlighter. It's a system that alerts you if someone says a particular word - usually your nick. It's a good way of people getting your attention if you're semi-afk. So, on the left click 'Highlight', and tick 'Enable Highlighting' click 'Add', and add your nick to it. You can also put $me to have the highlight "follow" you. Now, if anyone says your nick, mIRC will flash orange and beep at you until you look at it.

Finally, if you ever need any irc help, the best place to go to is #irc-help.
